Origin: Anc Greek καρωτίδα/karotida(=carotid artery) from verb καρόω/karoo(=plunge into stupor) because it was thought that pressing hard on these arteries made mammals lose consciousness. Another word etymology is derived from the anc Greek word κάρα/kara (=head).
