Term: orthopedics or in Britsh English orthopaedics

Origin: Ancient Greek from ορθόν/orthon (=streight) + παις/pes (=child)

Coined: by Nicolas Andry (1658–13 May 1742) who published his introduction to orthopedics in 1741 under the title Orthopédie which was translated into English in 1743 as Orthopaedia and it was reffered to prevention and correction of Deformities of Children.

Definition:

The branch of surgery that concerns with the prevention or correction of injuries or disorders of the locomotor system including skeletal system and associated muscles, joints, and ligaments.
