Term: cirrhosis

Origin:  Anc Greek κιρρός/kirros(= yellowish) + οσις/-osis(= suffic meaning a state of disease) because of tawny color of diseased liver.

Coined : in 1819 by French physician René Laennec (1781 –1826)

Definition:
Cirrhosis is a chronic degenerative liver disease that is characterized by the replacement of liver tissue by fibrous (scar) one leading to abnormal liver function and blood circulation. Cirrhosis is often the consequence of chronic hepatitis or of alcoholism.
