-ίτις(modern Greek -ίτιδα)/-ites (= suffix which is used with the feminine noun η νόσος/ e nosos/(=disease),  denoting  “inflammation of”.

Definition: noun suffix denoting inflammation of as in terms : dermatitis (inflammation of breast tissue)
arhritis (inflammation of joints)
colpitis (inflammation of vagina)
enteritis (inflammation of small intestine)
encephalitis (inflammation of the brain)
hepatitis (inflammation of the liver)
pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas)
meningitis (inflammation of the meninges)
