αγγείο-/angeio-(=vessel) combining forms that are used as prefix meaning a vessel > άγγος/aggos(=tube)
+ οίδημα/edema(=swelling) > οιδάνω/edano(=to swell) >οίδα/eda(="to see", as edema is seen due to its size)

Angio-oedema was described 1586 by Marcello Donati in a young count who was sensitive to egg. Hereditary angio-oedema was reported by Osler in 1885.

Angioedema (BE: angiooedema) is the rapid swelling of the dermis, subcutaneous tissue, mucosa and submucosal tissues most often around the lips and eyes. The difference to hives is that in angioedema the swelling is beneath the skin rather than on the surface.
