υπό/hypo (prefix meaning "under", "beneath", "less")
+ χόνδρος/chondros (=thick, coarse salt,  soft bone, carilages in the region between the ribs and navel)
Coined/History
In ancient Greece there was the belief that the viscera of the hypochondria were the seat of melancholy .

Definition
Hypochondria or hypochondriasis is is a long-term condition in which a person without cause has an excessive preoccupying fear of having a serious or  life-threatening disease.
