Literally meaning: “protein of flexibility”
Origin: Anc Greek
ελάω/elao(=be flexibe or ductile)) >ελαύνω/elavno(=run, drive)
The insolubility of elastin made its isolation difficult until early 1970’s when the soluble precursor of this matrix component, tropoelastin , was identified.
Elastin is, along with collagen, the main protein of connective tissue that in humans is encoded by ELN gene and it is found mainly in skin, intestines, tendons, blood vessels, lung and heart.
