Term: neodymium (Nd)
Literally meaning: “pertaining to new twin”
The element called “neodymium” because it was isolated from material named “didymium” and forms greenish-brown salts.
In 1882 Bohuslav Brauner announced that “didymium” incorrectly was said by Carl Mosander to be a new element (1841). In 1885 Baron Carl Auer Welsbach (1858-1929) recognized that “didymium” was consisted of two new elements: praseodimium and neodymium. Welsbach reacted “didymium” to form greenish-brown praseodymium and pink neodymium salts.
The element neodymium is a lustrous silvery-yellow metal with atomic number 60 and atomic mass 144,2. It is used with iron and boron to create powerful permanent magnents(NIB) ans as crystal in lasers.
