Origin:  Anc Greek from ασκίτης/ascites(=hydrops) > ασκός/askos(=sac)
Coined: Erasistratus(ca. 300-250 BC) was the first  who recognized  ascites and connected it with hepatic disease.  Celsus (30BC-50AD) postulated the link between ascites and renal diseases and he coined the term.  
Definition:
Ascites is the accumulation of serous fluid in the peritoneal (abdominal) cavity as a symptom during the course of various disease like liver disease (eg cirrhosis) , cancers, or kidney failure.
