Term: sarcoma

Origin: Anc Greek σαρξ/sarx(=flesh) + -ωμα/-oma(=suffix denoting state or condition especially a condition of mass growth) .

Coined: by Galen (ca 130-200) who described sarcoma as a “ fleshy excrescence” with the appearance of raw meat (σαρξ) although under the same term he combined swelling and benign tumors.  

Definition:
A sarcoma is type of malignant tumor that arises from transformed connective tissue cells (bone, cartillage, fat) originated by embryonic mesoderm.
