 (?)According Homer  (author of the Iliad and the Odyssey) used the word with the meaning of “burn”. Later the word meant “offer” and finally “offer sacrifice”
Definition
Ecthyma is an ulcerative pyoderma of the skin caused by group A beta-hemolytic streptococci after insect bite or minor trauma. Echtyma is similar to contagious impetigo but infection extends also into the dermis.

  1. Ecthyma can actually be caused by many types of bacteria. Pseudomonas is a more common cause than Group A strep.
