Literally meaning: “stone clotts”

Origin: Anc Greek
θρόμβος/thrombos(=clot)>θρόμβος/thrombos(=clot) > θρέφω /threpho (=feed) 
+ λίθος/lithos(=stone, rock)

Coined/History
In 1967 by Aiken who proposed that thrombolites are cryptalgal structures related to stromatolites but lacking laminisation and characterised by a macroscopic clotted fabric. 

Definition
Thrombolites, are clotted structures formed in shallow water  by the trapping and precipitation of particles of microorganisms, especially cyanobacteria (blue-green algae).
