+-άση/-asy(=-ase) enzyme suffix added to the name of the substrate that the enzyme  hydrolyzes eg proteinase for protein or lipase for lipids
>διά-/dia-(=prefix denoting “through”, “apart” )
> δυο/dio(two) + στάσις/stasis(=halt) > ίστημι/histimi(=stand).

Definition
lyase is an enzyme that catalyzes the breaking of various chemical bonds by means other than hydrolysis and oxidation forming usually a double bond, or that conversely add groups to double bonds. The reverse process is performed by synthetase (ligase).
