Definition
Periosteum is the dense membrane that covers the outer surface of bones and consisting of an inner cellular layer of osteoblasts (cambium) and an outer fibrous layer mostly with collagen. The periosteum offers protection and stability of bone and plays a important role in in the differentiation , growth and repair of bony tissue.
