Origin:  Anc Greek πλακούντας/placundas(flat cake ) > πλάξ/plax(=flat)

Coined: by Italian surgeon and anatomist Realdo Colombo in 16th cen

Definition:
It is an vascular fetomaternal organ that joins the developing fetus to the uterine providing fetus with  the nourishment. It serves also to  metabolic interchange between the embryo(eight weeks of gestation)  or fetus (after 9 weeks of gestasion)  and mother.

Comment
The word “platelet” has also the same root with word  "placenta"
