Origin: Anc Greek υπό/hypo(=under, sub-) + 2 letters of the word oxygen [Anc Greek οξύς/oxys(=sharp) + γένος/genos(=generation,  produced by) meaning acid-former because oxygen was thought  essential in the formation of acid].

 Definition:
Hypoxia is a condition characterized by reduction of oxygen supply.
