Origin: Anc Greek οξύς/oxys(=sharp) + γένος/genos(=generation, produced by) meaning acid-former because oxygen was thought essential in the formation of acids.
Coined:
In 1778 by French chemist Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier (1743-1794). Oxygen was discovered by Scheele and Priestly independently of each other in 1772 and 1774, respectively
Definition:
A gaseous element constituting 21 percent of the atmosphere by volume that occurs as a diatomic gas. Oxygen is essential for aerobic life in the planet.
