Origin: Anc Greek βίος/bios(=life) + όψις/opsis(=face, sight, look) as with biopsy we can have a look at life through a small sample
By French dermatologist Ernest Besnier (1831-1909) who coined the term and the technique of biopsy.
Definition
The procedure in which cells or tissues are removed from a living organism and examined visually, usually with a microscope for diagnostic purposes.
