Origin: Anc Greek δέρμα/derma(=skin beneath the epidermis) + -λογία/logia(=study of)
> δέρμα --> δεσμά/desma(=bonds) because skin keeps the body tight > δέρω/dero(=to peel, to flay)
> λόγος/logos(=speech, word, discourse)
Coined :
in 1764 as dermologie (French) and later as dermatologia ( 1777). The first who regarded the skin as a living organ of the body was the founder of French dermatology Anne Robert Willan (1757-1812) started the modern stream of dermatology. The first dermatological society in the world was founded in New York in 1869.
