 ιστός / histos(=warp, web) > ίστημι/istimi(=stand, inhibit)
+λογία/-logia(=study of)  

Coined: Marcello Malpighi (1628-1694) was the first who described pulmonary alveoli, capillaries, renal corpuscles, splenic corpuscles, and the Malpigian layer of the skin. Finally in 1819 the word “histologie” coined by August Mayer (1787-1865) in his book Über Histologie und eine neue Eintheilung der Gewebe des Menschlichen Körpers 

Definition:
 Histology is branch of anatomy studying the microscopic structure of animal and plant tissues.
