The element called “neodymium” because it was isolated
from material named “didymium” and forms greenish-brown salts.
Coined/History
In 1882 Bohuslav Brauner announced that “didymium”
incorrectly was said by Carl Mosander to be a new element (1841). In 1885 Baron
Carl Auer Welsbach (1858-1929) recognized that “didymium” was consisted of two
new elements: praseodimium and neodymium. Welsbach reacted “didymium” to form
greenish-brown praseodymium and pink neodymium salts.
Definition
The element neodymium is a lustrous
silvery-yellow metal with atomic number 60 and atomic mass 144,2. It is used
with iron and boron to create powerful permanent magnents(NIB) ans as crystal
in lasers.
