Term: Chlorophyll or chlorophyl
Origin: Anc Greek χλωρός/chloros(=green) + φύλλον/phyllon(=leaf)
Coined: in 1817 by chemists Pierre-Joseph Pelletier (1788-1842) and Joseph Bienaimé Caventou (1795-1877) who used mild solvents to successfully isolate many important biologically active plant products as chlorophyll, caffeine, strychnine, colchicine, quinine and veratrine.
Definition:
Chlorophyll is a green pigment found in photosynthetic organisms and it allows them to convert light energy to chemical energy.
